This Certified Physician Assistant – PRN position will be
located within the University of North Texas Health Science
Center’s (UNTHSC) – Correctional Medicine Department (CMD). This
position will report to CMD’s Clinical Operations Manager.
This contract position will responsible for providing Certified
Physician Assistant Health Care Services for UNTHSC’s Comprehensive
Medical Services contracts with the Federal Bureau of Prisons
(BOP). These services will be provided on-site and within the
secure perimeter of a Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional
facility in the Fort Worth area.
Position Summary This contract position will provide certified
physician assistant services and will be scheduled on a PRN basis
by UNTHSC’s Correctional Medicine Department to support the
coverage needs of the designated Federal Bureau of Prisons
Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited
Provide certified physician assistant services, including
diagnostic and therapeutic medical care, to patients while under
the guidance and supervision of a physician.
Services require knowledge of specific observation and
examination procedures, and the ability to perform diagnostic and
therapeutic tasks. Services do not include the full scope of
interpretation of medical findings requiring the full professional
background of the licensed physician.
Assist in the examination and observation of patients by
performing such duties as taking case histories, conducting
physical examinations, and ordering laboratory studies during
hospital rounds and clinic visits.
Carry out special procedures, including giving injections or
other medication, apply or change dressing, perform lumbar
punctures, or suture minor lacerations, as directed by a

evaluations of patient response in a timely and detail-oriented

clearly documenting all patient responses in the patient record and

facility guidelines, policies, and procedures.
Clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, patient care

Delivers quality medical care while minimizing the risk of
infection, contamination, harm, or injury to the patient.
Participate in the quality and performance improvement process,
as requested, within the assigned health care facility.
All other duties as assigned within the scope of their Certified
Physician Assistant licensure to support the clinical needs of the
assigned Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
Minimum Qualifications The successful candidate will possess the
following required qualifications:
Certified physician assistant licensed in the State of
Graduated from a physician assistant educational program,
accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for
the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college,
university, or educational institution that is accredited by an
accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S.
Department of Education.
Successfully completion of the National Commission on
Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must
maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including
completion of all requirements for continuing medical education
(CME) and re-certification.
Unrestricted license and clean disciplinary record (no
disciplinary action ever on any state license).
Pass and comply with the security clearance process at the
designated Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
Maintain and update skills and knowledge related to the
designated correctional environment.
Candidates must also demonstrate they have the following
knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Skill in making diagnoses selecting and providing appropriate
treatment for medical or surgical emergencies (life or death or
severe injury), as indicated until emergency assistance
Ability to assess a patient’s condition and to initiate
Knowledge of pharmaceuticals to treat disease and illness, to
include a knowledge of the mechanism of action, side effects, toxic
nature, and drug interactions of medications.
Ability to interpret diagnostic tests in order to determine
therapeutic treatment plans.
Ability to deal effectively with patients.
Preferred Qualifications The preferred candidate will possess
the following additional qualifications:
Registered Nurses with at least two years of demonstrated RN
experience in an outpatient clinic and/or inpatient setting.
