(CLEET certified officers only) Division: Tribal Law Enforcement
Job Title: Police Officer Supervision Received: Under the direct
supervision of the first line supervisor of their assigned
precinct. Supervision Exercised: None. General Definition: The
incumbent is assigned to the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police
Department. Duties include conducting patrols of the Chickasaw
Nation facilities to enforce laws and rules and provide protection
for individuals and property within the Chickasaw Nation
properties.The incumbent independently performs complete police and
investigative work and carries out the successive steps and handles
problems and deviations in accordance with instruction, policies,
previous training, or accepted practices. Independently initiates
appropriate interaction with federal, state and local agencies to
obtain information and/or assist in accomplishing assignments. If
the case turns out to be unusually complicated or controversial,
the supervisor provides specific advice and guidance on the problem
area. Completed work, including investigative reports and files are
reviewed for technical soundness, completeness and conformity to
program requirements. Essential Job Functions: As a law enforcement
officer of the Chickasaw Nation, subject to the criminal
jurisdiction of the Chickasaw Nation service area, and their
jurisdictions with which the Nation enters into cross deputization
agreements, incumbent performs a range of police duties requiring
development of police knowledge and skills, which requires
independent judgment and on-the-spot decisions. Duties include the
following:1. Responds to calls for service concerning criminal and
civil complaints, general public service calls, misdemeanors and
felonies under Chickasaw Tribal Laws, local, state and federal
laws. Among the most serious types of criminal activity dealt with
are: burglary, robbery, larceny, automatic theft, assault, rape and
homicide. Must deal with the full range of possible human actions.
Must pursue, apprehend and disarm suspected criminals.2.
Investigates, apprehends, arrest, and detains all person charged
with violation of Chickasaw Tribal Laws, U.S. Title 18 Chapters
1152. 1153, 1164 and 1165; Federal, State and tribal game and
fishing laws; and State statutes that may be applicable within
Indian Country.3. Responds to calls concerning emergencies such as
traffic accidents, confrontations, altercations and disorderly
conduct.4. Maintains law and order within the area of assignments
by patrolling in a patrol vehicle investigating suspicious
situations, and taking action as appropriate.5. Where serious
crimes or personal injury traffic accidents are involved,
determines necessary action, notifies appropriate authorities,
safeguards scenes, identifies and obtains information from
witnesses, and operates other equipment, which calls for fully
developed police skills.6. Performs such assignments as
participating in night surveillance in high crime areas,
participating in traffic and crowd control activities as pow wows
and religious ceremonies. Utilizes breath-analyzer to determine
degree of intoxication of drivers, and prepares and submits reports
of incidents or traffic accidents, daily and weekly activities, and
narratives and statistical reports as required.7. Make arrests in
cases of crimes personally witnessed; transports arrestee to
appropriate authority for booking or formal charging; serves local,
state, federal or tribal warrants, subpoenas and other court
papers; testifies at hearings as a witness in Federal, State, local
or tribal courts as required.8. Incumbent will aggressively enforce
all laws and regulations within his/her authority related to
possession, use, distribution, trafficking and manufacture of
controlled substances.9. Administers first aid when necessary,
including use of oxygen, CPR and other equipment and techniques as
appropriate.10. Serves as training officer as directed, providing
indoctrination and instruction to law enforcement personnel.11.
Performs, often independently, investigative work which may extend
over several days to several weeks. Such investigative work is
frequently undertaken, because of presence at remote crime
scenes.12. Required to utilize the Protocol and Style Manual when
preparing written and email correspondences.13. Performs all other
duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 1.
Comprehensive knowledge of police methods and procedures,
techniques used in police work such as investigation of
misdemeanors and minor felonies, traffic control, crowd control,
and unarmed defense procedures.2. Practical knowledge of standard
procedures used with criminal investigation and analysis methods,
principles, and practices and skill in applying this knowledge to
conducting long-term investigations.3. Thorough and complete
understanding of the applicable Federal, State and Chickasaw Tribal
laws and customs; fish and game laws appropriate to the location;
jurisdictional laws, rules, and relationship in Indian Country (the
area served, and differences with respect to other States and
tribes); and laws applicable to specific areas, incidents and
individuals.4. Skill in obtaining information by thorough
questioning of individuals, searching records and use of other
means to locate and apprehend suspected violators.5. Knowledge of
proper law enforcement procedures, including methods of searching,
seizing, arresting, and self-defense.6. Thorough knowledge of the
Constitutional protection afforded individuals including rules
concerning search, seizure, questioning or arrest; the difference
between felonies and misdemeanors and between criminal and civil
infractions; and the procedures for handling suspects.7. Thorough
knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of investigating;
skill in conducting interviews and interrogation techniques;
recognizing, collecting, and preserving physical evidence;
detecting discrepancies in information; dealing with emergency
situations; and preparing reports.8. Ability to analyze evaluate,
and organize information for the preparation of oral and written
technical briefings and reports.9. Skill in developing
interpersonal relationships, maintaining good working
relationships, and working cooperatively as a member of the
precinct.10. Skill in utilizing the various law enforcement, social
services, and tribal agencies in the prevention of crime. Training
and Experience: Bachelor degree preferred but not required and a
minimum of two years specialized experience in Indian law
preferred. Must have completed or be willing to attend the 16 week
training program at the Indian Police Academy located in Artesia,
New Mexico or the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training
in Ada, OK. Must successfully complete training as a requirement to
maintain employment. Experienced officers may apply for waiver only
depending on experience and relevant training. Licenses and
Certificates: The incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle
in performance of work. Must be a capable and competent driver with
a good driving record, and must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's
license. Must have and maintain a clean record, with no convictions
for felonies or qualifying misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence
which would prohibit receipt or possession of firearms or
ammunition, and misdemeanors in any jurisdiction that do not
categorize serious crimes as felonies. Must have or be able to
obtain First Responders CPR/First Aid Certification. Must be able
to pass a complete background investigation. Must obtain and
maintain a Bureau of Indian Affairs commission.Job Type:
