Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service ( HPS ) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution ( HSI ), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues and are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve with thoughtful, inclusive and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more. HPS Advising guides students from start to finish, helping them explore careers, choose their major, select courses, meet university requirements, prepare for graduation and more to ensure they have a meaningful undergraduate experience at UNT .

Position Overview

Conduct and coordinate tasks related to recruitment, retention, and graduation of undergraduate students within the College of Health and Public Service. As well, advise students regarding HPS degree requirements, academic policies, and to prepare degree plans and other materials for academic success.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively.
  • Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
    Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience working with college students.

    Work Schedule

    Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; some flexibility required as needed.

    Job Duties

    o

    GENERAL STUDENT ADVISING : Advise students regarding University requirements and individual program requirements. Provide extended advising for students on academic probation. Provide assistance to students during orientation and registration.

    o

    Represent HPS programs at University and College informational and recruiting functions.

    o

    Review graduation application information for accuracy and completeness, and advise student regarding problems detected in graduation information requirements. Assist with coordination and participation in graduation ceremony.

    o

    Exploration of life, career, and educational goals with advisee in collaboration with career counselor and department faculty advisor.

    o

    Maintain working familiarity with relevant University, College, and program policies and procedures, as well as, maintain mastery of EIS , U-Achieve, Word, Tracking System and other computer information systems required to perform job duties.

    o

    Coordinate and manage task assignments. i.e. freshman, transfer orientations, scholars, ambassadors, mentor, and certificate programs.

    o

    Create and update HPS' informational and recruitment materials. i.e. transfer guides, major information, scholarship information.

    o

    Promote open and considerate communication with students, advisors, supervisor, office, and University personnel. Also, greet visitors and students in a friendly, cooperative, and helpful manner, both by phone and in person, and facilitate conflict resolution in a positive and timely manner.

    o

    Attendance, punctuality, and productivity as required and adherence to professional office attire in accordance with University and office policy and procedures.

    o

    Ability to act with initiative and highly motivated, self-directed, follow university policy and procedures, and carry out all other duties as assigned.
