Job Title: Bus Training/Safety Specialist

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Assistant Director of Transportation

Pay Grade: Auxiliary 6

Work Calendar: 226 Days

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Coordinate the Transportation Department's Training and Safety program including, but not limited to, curriculum development, instructional materials, hands-on training and assessment, and DPS testing. Provide training for all CDL drivers, Transportation staff, and district vehicle operators in accordance with state, federal, and district regulations. Work collaboratively with Transportation employees, campus personnel, and parents to encourage safe behavior on the buses.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B w/ passenger and school bus endorsements).
  • Valid Texas school bus driver safety training certificate.
  • Acceptable motor vehicle report.
  • Acceptable report from the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Successful completion of TEEX Train-The-Trainer course or approved equivalent after hire.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Bilingual in Spanish (Preferred).
  • TAPT Certification (Preferred). Special Knowledge/Skills:
    • Obtain a one-year DOT medical certification card (DOT physical) and clear a pre-employment drug screen.
    • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
    • Effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
    • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
    • Willing to work irregular hours.
    • Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, industry-specific software and/or hardware.
    • Ability to manage students in a safe and appropriate transportation environment.
    • Ability to develop, implement, and conduct bus driver training programs to qualify new and current bus drivers for certification to operate a school bus in the state of Texas Experience:
      • Three years of successful experience in a transportation environment. (School district preferred.) Held a class B CDL for a minimum of two years. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

        Training
      • Ensure that all employees are properly trained and in compliance with all district-specific requirements as well as safety-related regulatory requirements, including state and federal regulations.
      • Plan topics for safety meetings, and prepare and present effective training sessions as required.
      • Maintain training files for Transportation department employees and other full-time district staff who have CDL driving responsibilities. Safety
      • Assist with the scheduling and coordination of monthly safety meetings.
      • Receive and follow up on safety concerns of the employees and community.
      • Serve as an active member of the department's Collision Review Committee (CRC).
      • Review and record data from bus videos as needed in regards to training, compliance, and collision review.
      • Respond to and investigate collisions; maintain electronic and hard-copy documentation as required. Other
      • Maintain confidentiality regarding student and coworker information and as required by FERPA.
      • Perform the duties of a school bus driver, bus aide, and/or dispatcher based on operational needs.
      • Attend professional development opportunities to keep abreast of development and innovations in the area of transportation.
      • Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of the district and directives from Transportation Department administrators.
      • Evaluate transportation employees according to federal, state, and district policies, laws and guidelines.
        SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
        • None.
          WORKING CONDITIONS

          Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; school bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher

          Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling

          Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; prolonged driving; moderate walking, climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reaching

          Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds) on a daily basis

          Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours

          Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.

          * This position shall be placed at a rate of pay that equates to at least $1.00 per hour beyond the bus driver pay placement scale for their years of experience as a driver or the traditional scale placement guidelines, whichever is greater.
